What if my site is loading slow? - 2006/07/14 13:15
We often get support requests related to slow loading web pages. However, there are many variables that control how quickly your web site loads. I will discuss some of them in this post.
What can cause slow loading web pages? Virus and spyware infections on your computer can cause slow loading web pages, pop-ups, and multiple other annoyances. You should first determine if you have any of these conditions. Some helpful links include:
Online Virus Checkers Trend Micro Housecall - will scan and remove threats BitDefender Scan Online - will scan and remove threats Ewido Online Scanner - will scan and remove threats Panda Activescan - appears to only scan for but not remove threats McAfee FreeScan - appears to only scan for but not remove threats eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner - will scan and remove threats Symantec Security Check - will scan and remove threats Dr.Web Online Check - user can upload and test for threats on particular files
Trojan Scanner TrojanScan by WindowsSecurity.com
Free Antivirus Programs to Download ANTI-VIR AVAST AVG
You may also want to run a thorough scan for adware/spyware using Ewido Anti-malware, Ad-aware SE, Spybot Search and Destroy, or Microsoft Antispyware now known as Windows Defender as well to make sure your system is absolutely clean of other malware.
If you system is clean from virus and spyware infections, your ISP (or the connection between your computer and our servers) can also cause slow loading web pages if they are experiencing problems. A few suggestions for determining if you ISP is the cause is to go to DSLReports and click on Tools, then click on Speed Test and select the mirror closest to your location. DSLReports speed test will work for dial-up, dsl, cable, and other types of internet connections. A lower speed than what you believe you have will indicate a problem with your isp or possibly a router between your computer and our servers.
Another test you can perform to determine if the problem is not our servers is a simple traceroute test. To perform this test in Windows, follow these steps: 1 - click on start 2 - click on run 3 - in the open dialog box, type
4 - select run or o.k.
5 - in the dos window that appears, type | Code: | tracert your_comain.com
| and press enter. Replace your_domain.com with your actual domain name.
6 - in the results that appear, copy and past them into a support ticket
To perform this test in Unix like operating systems, follow these steps:
1 - open a shell or console, in linux you can press ctrl + alt + f1
2 - type the following command and replace your_domain.com with your actual domain name: | Code: | traceroute your_domain.com > traceroute.txt
|
3 - switch back to your desktop, in linux, press ctrl + alt + f7
4 - submit the contents of the traceroute.txt file to a support ticket
If you still believe the problem is related to our servers, please submit a support ticket. You can also try to obtain results using a 3rd party monitoring tool which monitors how fast a particular web page loads and it does this from multiple locations. Run the following test and submit those results with your support ticket.:
1 - go to Alertra Monitoring Service
2 - At the top of the page, Next to Spot Check, enter the url to check
3 - click on the check button.
4 - copy and paste the results into a trouble ticket
To make the best use of our trouble ticket system, always submit the results from DSLReports.com, traceroute, and Alertra to speed up diagnostics.
