FTP times out, disconnects or ..... - 2004/12/08 03:56 This problem has the following detailed symptoms:

  • If you are using Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver gives the error message "Waiting for Server" followed by "An FTP error occurred - cannot get remote folder info" and then a disconnect notice.

  • Other FTP clients and programs that you try to connect with just timeout and disconnect.

  • You think the problem is at XtremeWebHosts because you have not modified your own settings since the last time you used FTP successfully.

  • You seem to be being blocked from using FTP.

  • Suddenly you only have access to certain directories with ftp, but not others deeper down the directory trees.

  • Turning Passive Mode on or off makes no difference.

  • Adobe GoLive disconnects with a site error

Possible solutions:

  • Use the ftp in your cpanel control panel and see if you can now ftp your files and see all directories

  • Your broadband, DSL, or ADSL provider could be using Proxy-Cache on its network to cut its costs, which prevents you from getting fresh data from remote connections. This will need resolved with your ISP.

  • Check your personal firewall/security settings (programs like Black ICE Defender, Zone Alarm, Norton Anti-Virus, and Windows XP Firewall, along with hardware routers such as Linksys, US Robotics, etc) to make sure that they are configured to allow your FTP access. Try turning these programs completely off and retry FTP.

  • Some computer virus, trojans, spyware, etc can cause network connection problems. You can check for virus using Housecall Free Online Virus Scan and check for spyware using the free Spybot Search & Destroy spyware checker/removal tool. On a side note, just because you have a virus scanner that is up to date does not mean you do not have any virus on your computer, trust us with this statement and check it using Housecall!!

  • Try using FTP from a different computer at your same location.

  • Try using FTP from a different computer at a different location outside your building that gets internet access from a different provider or that is on a different network.

  • Submit a trouble ticket to our support department if you still believe the problem is with XtremeWebHosts or if you are unable to resolve the issue.
